About the Role

The South African Navy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Technician to lead and supervise the Constructive Section of its Naval Design Office. This is a pivotal role within Fleet Command, responsible for controlling design, acceptance, and trial functions for naval support vessels. The successful candidate will play a key part in maintaining the operational readiness of the naval fleet through expert engineering design and project management.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this prestigious position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: A National Diploma in Engineering or a relevant qualification.
  • Experience: A minimum of 6 years of post-qualification technical experience.
  • Registration: Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineering Technician.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proven experience in a Commercial shipyard or marine constructive design environment.
  • Experience in a Marine/Mechanical drawing office within a Marine Engineering or Naval Architectural discipline.
  • In-depth knowledge of Class and IMO rules and regulations for surface vessels.
  • Proficiency in AutoCad / Caddie and the MS Office suite.
  • Strong report writing, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

Advantageous Knowledge:

  • Understanding of naval surface vessel rules and naval stores procurement practices.
  • Knowledge of refit procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The duties of this leadership role are extensive and include:

  • Supervising and leading the Constructive Section of the Naval Design Office.
  • Controlling the Constructive Acceptance and Trial functions.
  • Managing the Constructive element of Support Vessel Engineering Change (EC) and upgrade services.
  • Overseeing Constructive Projects, Tasks, and Functions.
  • Managing and organizing the resources and workflow of the Constructive Section.
