The South African Navy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Artisan Foreman to join the team at Naval Base Durban. This is a senior role perfect for a seasoned artisan with strong leadership capabilities and a deep understanding of mechanical systems.

About the Role

This position is a supervisory role within the Island Maintenance Services section. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing work performance, interpreting technical drawings, managing resources, and ensuring a safe working environment. It is a critical function that supports the operational readiness of the Naval Base.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements:

  • An appropriate Trade Test Certificate.
  • A minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan or Artisan Foreman.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Extensive experience in a Mechanical Field.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive skill set, including:

  • Advanced knowledge of tools, machinery, and safety hazard reporting.
  • Strong planning, coordinating, and supervisory skills.
  • Basic knowledge of HR matters, labour relations, and financial management.
  • Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and computerised maintenance systems (e.g., OSIS).
  • Excellent fault-finding skills on diesel engines, refrigeration plants, and pumps.
  • Proven ability in technical report writing, project management, and team leadership.
  • Computer literacy, including word processing.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Allocate tasks and oversee the work performance of subordinates.
  • Interpret technical drawings and work dossiers to guide maintenance work.
  • Order and control miscellaneous stores and resources.
  • Manage the Section Island Maintenance Services effectively.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and provide technical advisory services.
