About the Internship
This is not your average internship. Designed for immersive learning, you will split your time between the commercial energy of Jacaranda FM in Midrand and the dynamic campus environment of VowFM at Wits University in Johannesburg. The rotation happens every six weeks, providing a well-rounded perspective of the broadcasting industry. A key benefit includes attending various short courses offered by the prestigious Wits Radio Academy. All successful candidates will receive a monthly basic stipend for the duration of the programme.
Your Learning Journey: What You’ll Experience
The internship is structured to equip you with a comprehensive skill set essential for a successful career in radio.
At Jacaranda FM (Midrand):
- Grasp the fundamentals of general newsroom operations.
- Work alongside seasoned journalists, assisting with story compilation.
- Gain real-world experience through field reporting and working on the news desk.
- Receive practical exposure across various functions within the news department.
At VowFM (Johannesburg):
- Develop on-air confidence by reading and compiling news bulletins.
- Hone your reporting skills from the field.
- Learn the art of packaging content for current affairs programmes.
- Participate directly in news and current affairs programming.
- Master digital storytelling by updating social media platforms with news content.
- Formally enhance your knowledge through Wits Radio Academy short courses.
Are You the Ideal Candidate? Programme Requirements
To be eligible for this transformative opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree or a 3-year National Diploma in Journalism or a closely related field.
- Possess a valid driver’s licence (or be in the process of obtaining one).
- Have an excellent command of English; bilingualism in Afrikaans and English is a significant advantage.
- Demonstrate competence in writing and voicing radio scripts.
- Exhibit strong fact-checking and quality control abilities.
- Have basic experience using field/studio production and recording equipment.
- Possess basic editing and multi-track mixing experience.
