Position Details

  • Salary: R391,671 – R418,332 per annum
  • Centre: Fleet Command HQ, SA Navy Hydrographic Office, Silvermine, Tokai (Cape Town)
  • Contract: This is a contract position ending 31 March 2028.

Do You Have What It Takes? Key Requirements

To be considered for this prestigious role, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • A National Diploma (or higher) in Geomatics (GISc), Cartography, or a Relevant Qualification.
  • A minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience as a GISc Technician.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Special Skills & Knowledge:
    • Experience in a Marine Cartography environment is a distinct advantage.
    • Working knowledge of Geo-database implementation.
    • Proficiency with GIS software applications and spatial data.
    • Strong understanding of the theory, standards, principles, and practices of GIS and cartography.
    • Excellent planning, organising, and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
    • Effective communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
    • Competency in MS Office Suite and basic office equipment.
    • Must be willing to travel nationally and internationally when required.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a GISc Technician at the Hydrographic Office, your core duties will be vital to maritime navigation:

  • Produce Paper Nautical Charts: Create accurate and up-to-date paper charts for safe sea navigation.
  • Maintain Nautical Chart Reproduction Material: Manage and update the source materials used for chart production.
  • Reproduce Paper Nautical Charts: Execute the technical process of chart printing and reproduction.
  • Undertake Print-on-Demand (POD) Requirements: Fulfill specific, on-demand chart printing requests.
