About the Role

The Department of Employment and Labour is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join the team at the Mthatha Labour Centre as a Senior Occupational Hygiene Inspector. This critical role involves ensuring workplace compliance with health and safety legislation, protecting employee rights, and promoting a culture of safety within the region.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A Senior Certificate (Matric).
  • A 3-year recognized qualification (NQF Level 6, SAQA recognized) in Occupational Hygiene or Environmental Health.
  • A valid driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Registration with a relevant professional body is advantageous.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and Unemployment Insurance Act. Essential skills include:

  • Excellent planning, organizing, and analytical abilities.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in conflict handling and problem-solving.
  • Computer literacy.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Planning and conducting independent inspections to ensure compliance with the OHS Act and its regulations.
  • Investigating and finalizing complaints and incidents related to occupational health and safety, including appearing in court as a state witness.
  • Confirming employer registration with the UIF and COIDA.
  • Planning and executing advocacy campaigns to educate on labour legislation.
  • Contributing to regional inspection plans and compiling detailed statistical reports.
