About the Role

The South African Navy’s Fleet Command is seeking a highly skilled and registered Engineering Technician to join its team at the strategic Naval Communications Centre in Silvermine, Tokai. This is a critical role that involves maintaining and ensuring the operational readiness of sophisticated HF Radio Telecommunications systems in a unique, secure environment.

Key Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A National Diploma in Engineering or a relevant qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 years of post-qualification technical experience.
  • Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineering Technician.
  • A valid driver’s license (own transport is beneficial).

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge of HF Radio Telecommunications, both practical and theoretical.
  • Expertise in fault-finding procedures and the ability to diagnose issues to the component level.
  • Proficiency in soldering techniques and using tools and general test equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and circuit diagrams.
  • Strong leadership, supervision, and management skills.
  • Excellent planning, organising, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in English (written and verbal).
  • Proficiency in MS Office and computer-aided engineering packages.
  • Knowledge of project management and legal compliance.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be entrusted with the following duties:

  • Control all maintenance and repair work on equipment within the communication system, general electrics, and support systems.
  • Act as a Divisional Officer for both civilian and uniformed staff.
  • Coordinate the installation, refurbishment, and disposal of equipment and handbooks.
  • Arrange and supervise technical training for personnel.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all personnel, equipment, and documentation.
  • Manage annual budgeting and stores, including internal demands and outside purchasing.

Additional Important Notes

  • The work location is an underground facility with mechanical air and lighting.
  • The successful candidate must be willing and able to work overtime, including nights and weekends.
